The Islip Irish Day Parade marches on

Posted

Islip came together for the Islip Irish Day Parade last Sunday, Sept 20. Kicking off at 2 p.m., the parade marched from 401 Main Street to 655 Main Street, inviting locals to watch and celebrate together.

Edward “Lanny” Skehan was this year’s grand marshal, recognized for his presence in the local Irish scene. For almost four decades, Skehan has become a bartending staple, serving folks since 1987 at Lily Flanagan’s and now at the Harp & Hound. In honor of his continued involvement in the community, Skehan led the parade down Main Street.

Many local groups marched down Main Street to show their Irish pride. Saffron United Pipe Band played their pipes and banged their drums for paradegoers to enjoy. The Central Islip Fire Department showed up with several of their firetrucks, sirens on, to make the parade loud and proud. Rusy Bohm Post 411 made sure to highlight Islip veterans and their own Irish pride. East Islip Soccer Club threw Irish goodies for the crowd, with flags and many green necklaces to go around.

Closing out the ceremony was Skehan’s official recognition as the grand marshal. Locals gave a round of applause for his many years serving locals, with some raising a drink in celebration.

Rain or shine, the Islip residents showed up in droves for the Islip Irish Day Parade, giving the town a day full of Irish pride and celebration as a community.
