Bellport Yacht Club hosts over 100 boats

Last weekend, the Bellport Bay Yacht Club hosted the 2023 Optimist Atlantic Coast Championship Regatta. Fortunately, Hurricane Lee stayed offshore, creating windy but sailable water with a southwest breeze.

The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy used by children up to the age of 15.

A total of 107 sailors and about 100 volunteers took part in the championship fleet, which comprised six races over a total of two days, Saturday, Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 17.

During the event, an additional 13 sailors competed in nine shorter races in the Green (beginner) Fleet. Bellport Bay Sailing Foundation was represented by 11 sailors in the Championship Fleet and four sailors in the Green Fleet.

“We were excited to host a regatta of this scale here in Bellport and saw some great competition,” said Eric Everitt, Regatta chair and Bellport Bay Yacht Club commodore. “A big thank you to all of the sailors, their families and coaches, and all of the volunteers for helping to make this a great event.”

The top 30 competitors now qualify for the 2024 Optimist Team Trials in San Francisco, Calif., in April 2024.
