Brookhaven Highway superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro recently announced the completion of a $825,000 Comprehensive Stormwater and Flood Mitigation project in Patchogue.
Designed to reduce discharges to Patchogue Bay by disconnecting two outfalls and re-routing stormwater through new, green infrastructure that encompasses a living shoreline feature, this project was constructed on three waterfront parcels along South Breeze Drive in Patchogue. The total project cost was $825,000; funding was provided by a grant from the Suffolk County Water Quality Protection Restoration Program and Land Steward Initiative in the amount of $250,000.
As part of the project, the waterfront parcels were excavated to create a bioretention system with a forebay, or artificial pool of water in front of the shoreline, and intertidal exchange zone. In addition, two outfall pipes were disconnected and rerouted to discharge to the bioretention area. Finally, bulkhead was removed and a natural rock wall with tidal openings was constructed along the shoreline.
In 2019, the Town of Brookhaven initiated an assessment of South Shore road ends to identify the most vulnerable in need of mitigation measures to improve resiliency and protect water quality. This drainage grant project is a result of the Town of Brookhaven’s Climate Smart South Shore Communities Plan.
“Protecting Brookhaven’s vital waterways and infrastructure to prevent damage by large-scale storm events is a main priority of my office,” said Losquadro. “I am grateful to have received funding for this important drainage project.”
