Town of Islip symbolically renames road in honor of fallen firefighter

‘FF Billy Moon’s Way’

During the recent Islip Town Board meeting, held on Tuesday, May 14, the town board voted to symbolically rename Franklin Street and Webster Road in Islip to “FF Billy Moon’s Way.”

In an easy, unanimous vote, the board honored the fallen firefighter, who was raised in Islip, for his heroism and dedication to keeping his community safe.

William P. “Billy” Moon II was raised in Islip and was a 28-year volunteer in the Islip Fire Department, even serving as chief of the department from 2016 to 2017.

Moon, who always dreamed of joining the New York City Fire Department, was a 21-year member of the FDNY.

According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, on Dec. 12, 2022, 47-year-old Moon was preparing for a drill inside his firehouse when he fell about 20 feet and suffered a serious head injury, causing his tragic passing on Dec. 20, 2022. His heroism continued even after death, as he gave the final gift of donating his organs.

Moon was survived by his two children, Brianne and Colin, and his wife, Kristina.

The symbolic change to “FF Billy Moon’s Way” will be placed in addition to the current street signs. Franklin Street and Webster Road in Islip are located off of Commack Road in Islip, north of Sunrise Highway and south of Southern State Parkway. The intersection is significant to Moon and his family, as it is the closest intersection to Billy and Kristina’s home.

With the two roads symbolically renamed after the firefighter, residents in the Town of Islip will remember Moon for his big personality and passion for his job, and his bravery, which will never be forgotten.
