The William Floyd girls varsity tennis team, under the tutelage of two-time USTA Tennis Coach of the Year Dave Pia, just completed another great season! They finished the regular season undefeated 16-0, clinching the No. 1 seed, and after a first-round bye, won their first two playoff matches against Mt. Sinai and Sachem before falling in a tough semifinal match to No. 2 Westhampton. They finished the season 18-1 overall.
The No. 14-ranked William Floyd boys varsity soccer team also qualified for the final four after two road playoff victories over No. 3 Commack and No. 11 Smithtown West. They traveled to West Islip in the semifinals and lost in a hard-fought game.
The William Floyd Colonials girls varsity cross country team, under the leadership of head coach John Ryan, also finished their regular season undefeated with a 6-0 record and a successful defense of their league championship. The Colonials put together another great performance at the Suffolk County Division Championship Meet held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Sunken Meadow State Park. Highlights include ninth-grader Zariel Macchia winning the Suffolk County Division Championship in the 5K (18:52.4), her second in as many seasons, breaking a 37-year-old Sunken Meadow course school record in the process (Edith Vilardi, 18:54.8/1984). Additionally, the team of Zariel Macchia, Alanis Gonzalez, Alaysia Cobb, Aaliyah Jordan, and Karen Jackson combined for the fifth-fastest average team time in Suffolk County, qualifying the team for the State Qualifier Meet on Friday.
The William Floyd Colonials varsity football team qualified for the playoffs for the 21st consecutive year with a 37-15 victory over Ward Melville. Under the leadership of the legendary football coach Paul Longo, the Colonials finished the regular season 7-1 and clinched the No. 2 seed. This victory was also Coach Longo’s 212th in his career, the most in Suffolk County public high school football programs. They will host Brentwood on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m., as they began their quest for a 14th Suffolk County title and a sixth Long Island Championship.
The William Floyd Colonials girls varsity soccer team, led by head coach Kaleigh Sidaras, qualified for the playoffs in the final game of their season with a thrilling double-overtime victory clinching themselves the No. 15 seed in the process. In that game, the Colonials overcame a 3-1 deficit playing their hearts out with great all-around play, including three goals by Tara DiMaio, who also scored the game-winner. Kayden Meyer scored one goal and two assists, and Kayla Gilmore also scored. Ava Comstock notched an assist and Ava Tiedemann had 10 saves in net. The Colonials lost in the first round to No. 2 Ward Melville to finish up their season.
