William Floyd tops Smithtown East, 64-51

Posted

William Floyd and Smithtown East were locked in a tight game for three quarters, with Floyd holding onto a slim 48-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Smithtown East double-teamed and trapped Floyd’s ball handlers each time they got the ball, making passing and scoring difficult.

But Floyd finally figured out how to break Smithtown East’s trap in the fourth quarter as the Colonials opened on a 9-0 run. Their defense held the Bulls to six points in the quarter as Floyd pulled away to a 64-51 road win on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The win moves Floyd to 2-0 on the season as it looks to make it back to the Suffolk County Class AAA championship game. The Colonials finished 22-1 last season. Their only loss was to Bay Shore in the championship game.

“We feel good,” head coach Will Slinkoski said following Thursday’s game. “We’ve had two tough games in a row (against Bellport and Smithtown East). We’ve got another one coming against Elmont and another coming against Walt Whitman and then Patchogue-Medford. We specifically made our schedule to be this difficult so we could continue to push ourselves, see the talent on the island and see how we stack up against them.”

Four Colonials finished in double figures on Thursday.

Senior forward Jawuan Smith led the team with 18 points. Sophomore guard/forward Khomari Wilson had 12 points. Junior guard/forward Sharod Sutton had 11 points and junior guard JJ Smith had 10 points.

Slinkoski also praised senior guard Jermaine King—“one of our phenomenal leaders”—who had seven points and led a strong defensive effort.

“It was definitely a good team win for us,” Slinkoski said. “We really needed this.”

Smithtown East’s Craig O’Neill led all scorers with 20 points.
