The Town of Islip recognized six members of the community in honor of Women’s History Month, which is celebrated March 1 to 31. The ceremony was held on March 11 at 2 p.m. at the Town of Islip Hall.

“March is National Women’s History Month and all of us at the Town of Islip are so proud to celebrate women from all walks of life who positively impact our lives every day,” Town of Islip supervisor Angie Carpenter said. “This month is a meaningful tribute to the countless contributions women make in our community and beyond.”

The first recipient was Dr. Irene Macyk. She has been the executive director of South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where she was born, since 2023. Macyk has held leadership programs that prioritize community support.

Olga Hopkins Murray was the second recipient, who has given back to her community. She was a town clerk for Islip for 12 years, leading a bilingual office. Murray’s office was awarded an outstanding review from the U.S. Department of State as a passport acceptance facility for their service.

Helen R. Moss was recognized for giving back to her community in Brentwood. She has dedicated her time to fostering education by mentoring youth and focusing on science and technology. Moss was also involved with the finance and policy committees of the Brentwood Board of Education.

Rachel DeMolfetto and Karla Waldron were each awarded, with DeMolfetto accepting on behalf of her sister, Waldron. The two have made significant contributions as mentors and leaders, each in their own way. DeMolfetto is the owner of Racine Salon and a visionary of Mondays at Racine, a cancer-care program that has supported over 10,000 individuals since 2003.

Waldron is the executive director at Mondays Cancer Care. Her work operates in 21 locations across New York State and continues to grow in client numbers. Waldron founded the Long Island Beauty Ball, which is in its eighth year and brings beauty businesses together to help fundraise for Monday Cancer Care.

Kristina Moon was recognized for creating the Billy Moon Foundation. Moon founded the nonprofit organization  in honor of her late husband and well-known firefighter, Billy Moon. The charity aims at providing support and awareness about organ donations, displaying Kristina Moon’s resilience.

“I challenge all of you to remember all the outstanding women in your life,” Carpenter said. “Not just this month. but all the time.”

The next town board meeting will be held on April 11 at 5:30 p.m. It will be in celebration of Student Community Service Awards.
