When you need to wear a mask in public

On April 15, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order that required people to wear a face covering while in public. The order mandates that a face covering must be worn when people are unable to socially distance or in public transportation and ride shares.

“Another part of getting to the new normal is continuing to stop the spread of the virus, and to do that I am issuing an executive order that says all people in public must wear a mask or face covering,” Cuomo said in the announcement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also encouraged the public to wear masks to stop the spread of the disease.

“We are not defenseless against COVID-19,” said CDC director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus – particularly when used universally within a community setting. All Americans have a responsibility to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.”

Masks work best when all people in a particular setting use them. The CDC performed a study where two hair stylists who had COVID-19 worked with 139 clients, all of whom were wearing facemasks. Results showed that of 67 clients tested, all were negative, and the other clients did not report any symptoms.

There are many situations in daily life when a face covering is required, like entering a store, or walking through a public area with other people. In restaurants, face cover- ings are required at all times, except when at a table eating.

How to use a face covering

Using a face covering correctly, whether it be homemade, medical, or otherwise, can be crucial in its effectiveness in stopping the spread of COVID-19. First, wash your hands, then place the covering over your mouth, nose, and chin. Fit it snugly on your face, but still make sure you can breathe easily. When removing the covering, handle by the ties or loops, place in washing machine or with other dirty clothes, and then wash your hands.
