The beloved thrift shop, Angels of Long Island, suffered another robbery last month, this time at their second and newest location in Mastic.
The thrift shop, which often provides free clothing, food, and baby supplies to low-income families, is in need itself after a man broke down a door at 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 23. After breaking and entering, he stole inventory as well as tools, the donation jar, and an envelope with cash.
“He walked around the store a good hour, shopping away smoking a cigarette,” said founder Debbie Loesch, noting the man was apprehended Monday afternoon. “We have struggled before and made it out, all while serving the community. But we can use the help ourselves at this time.”
The damaged door also needs replacing.
A similar situation happened at the East Patchogue location, last year, when a woman allegedly stole $1,600 from the shop, which was allocated for the establishment’s rent and salaries. However, members of the Patchogue community immediately came to the aid of the store by raising funds for the organization.
