Bellport’s Playcrafters Theatre Company presents the comedic farce “The 39 Steps” for five performances starting Saturday, June 1.
The play was adapted by Patrick Barlow from a 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is based on the original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon.
“The 39 Steps” centers around Richard Hannay, (played by Andrew Accardi in his Playcrafters debut) who gets tangled up with a mysterious female German spy (played by Emily Vaeth) who involves Harney in thwarting an international spy ring intent on world domination.
It’s a lot less serious than it sounds.
“It’s such a funny farce,” said Playcrafters president Flo Federaman, who is also one of the play’s producers. “It’s such a fun show. It’s going to be a good time for those who join us.”
Catherine Clyne directs the play, which will be Playcrafters’ first production at its new home at Brookhaven Elementary School.
Clyne has directed at many theaters across Long Island. This is the fifth play Clyne has directed at Playcrafters. Her most recent was “The Tin Woman” in 2021.
Clyne had seen “The 39 Steps” on Broadway and proposed the idea to Playcrafters.
She said the play is a challenge to put on because the four actors – the cast also includes Eric Clavell and Kevin Clyne – play 150 roles, so there are a lot of scene, lighting and costume changes.
But the cast and everybody else associated with the production are up for the challenge, Clyne said.
“It’s a real team effort,” she said.
“The 39 Steps” is one of two productions Playcrafters will present this year. In the fall, they will do the comedy “Bermuda Avenue Triangle.”
