Fire Island Lighthouse Tower façade repair

The National Park Service (NPS) announces the next phase of the Lighthouse Tower Façade Repair.

Fire Island National Seashore will be contracting the removal of two exterior panels and associated brick rubble located on the northeast side from the base of the lighthouse terrace over the next several weeks.

“The safe removal of the panels is the first step in implementing the previous stabilization effort of the lower white day marker shotcrete panels,” said Jim Dunphy, facility manager.

“Fire Island National Seashore continues to place visitor safety as the highest priority, while communicating with Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society and the public regarding next steps for this treasured site,” said Fire Island National Seashore superintendent Alexcy Romero. “There is no firm date for reopening the tower.”

During the removal of the panels and stabilization project, the terrace north of the Keeper’s Quarters building and adjacent boardwalks will remain closed.

The park also advises visitors to stay out of closed areas. Although the tower is temporarily closed, the Lens Building, Keepers Quarters and museum store are open and accessible to the public.
