On Oct. 9, supervisor Ed Romaine (center), deputy supervisor Dan Panico (with scissor) and Suffolk County Legis. Jim Mazzarella (right, holding ribbon) celebrated the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase 1 of the new Patriots Preserve in Shirley. This state-of-the-art park, which is situated on 100 acres, includes a playground, walking trails, lake with floating bridge, kayak launch, rest rooms and more. It is located on the former Links Golf Course at the east end of Colony Preserve Drive, off William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. Also joining the supervisor and deputy supervisor at the ribbon-cutting ceremony were community groups, civic associations, and local residents. The new Patriots Preserve Park is now open seven days a week from dawn to dusk.
