Brad Malm, a four-year letter winner in baseball and basketball at Patchogue-Medford High School, has signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets.

Malm, a shortstop, graduated from UAlbany this past spring after spending five years with the program. According to UAlbany’s website, he will be assigned to New York’s Single-A affiliate, the St. Lucie Mets, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

“I am so excited to begin my professional baseball career with the New York Mets,” Malm said in a release from UAlbany. “My family, friends, coaches and teammates have all helped me get to where I am today. I am only going to work harder from here to make everyone proud.”

During his final season in Albany, Malm had home runs in the team’s first seven games and finished the season with 15 in total, a UAlbany single-season record, and tied for the most in the America East Conference for the season. According to stats from Ualbany, Malm led the conference during the regular season in total bases and slugging percentage. He started all 47 games for the Great Danes and was twice named the America East Player of the Week. After the end of his final season, he was named to the America East Second Team All-Conference. In 2021, he was named to the conference first team. Malm was a nominee for the America East Man of the Year Award, which is given to the top male student-athlete who has “distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership.”

In high school, Malm averaged .420, with 35 hits and five home runs his senior year. His career average was .380 with 85 hits. He was a two-time team offensive and offensive MVP.

In a post on his Instagram on July 22, Malm said, “Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. I can’t wait to begin my professional career with the New York Mets.”
