BAY SHORE, NY – South Shore University Hospital (SSUH) announced the completion of the first phase of its $71 million Women and Infants Center. Phase one includes the completion of 11 postpartum private suites and four dedicated obstetrical-triage beds.

With accommodations for families, the 11 new postpartum suites feature private bathrooms and closets, LCD flat-screen televisions as well as recliners and sofas that convert to pull-out beds. The four new triage beds will be staffed 24/7 by an obstetrician and registered nurses. SSUH delivers about 2,400 babies each year.

“The commitment by this hospital and health system to providing state of the art care for women and infants in the eastern region of Long Island is nothing short of spectacular,” said Peter Finamore, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at SSUH. “The triage and postpartum area are beautiful. We are proud to have completed the first phase of this renovation.”

When the 45,560-square-foot, two-story center is completed by the end of 2023, this hospital-within-a-hospital will also have its own dedicated entrance and an upgraded 16-bed, all-private suite neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). SSUH is Northwell Health’s Suffolk County trauma center.

SSUH also plans to open two state-of-the-art operating rooms that will be dedicated to women’s health procedures, including a new da Vinci surgical system to perform minimally invasive, robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures.

The Women and Infants Center expansion is part of a $500 million, five-year investment in South Shore University Hospital to expand both services and quality of care to Suffolk County residents.
