Swan dad saved from fishing hook on Father’s Day

Brightwaters residents urged to practice responsible fishing

In recent years, fishing on the lakes in the village has increased significantly, and evidently, some people forgot to pack their safe fishing practices in their tackle boxes.

On Father’s Day this past Saturday, a Brightwaters’ father swan received what is likely the worst Father’s Day gift imaginable: a fishhook and bob lodged in its neck.

In a similar tragic incident, last Thursday, an osprey became entangled in a fishing line that was left in the water of a Brightwaters lake, and tragically drowned.

Thanks to the swift, heroic actions of wildlife volunteers, including Brightwaters resident Christine Micelli and her wildlife friends, the fish hook and bob were safely removed from the swan’s neck.

Brightwaters mayor John Valdini has since urged residents to exercise safe, responsible fishing practices, reiterating the importance of cleaning up and taking away all fishhooks and lines.

“While we wholeheartedly support children engaging in outdoor activities, we urge parents to take responsibility for teaching their kids the importance of being mindful and respectful of the environment.” These incidents and numerous reports of littered fishing lines can be easily prevented if everyone takes the necessary steps to clean up after themselves, demonstrating a genuine concern for the well-being of our local wildlife.

Valdini also noted that the village board will continue closely monitoring this issue and explore potential solutions. In the meantime, all parents are urged to speak with their children about the importance of responsible actions while enjoying outdoor activities.
