Upcoming schedule announced for County Summer Youth Connection Program

Summer Programs will Provide Children Ages 12-18 with Free Educational, Fitness & Wellness Opportunities

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the schedule for the 2017 Suffolk County Summer Youth Connection Program. The program, in partnership with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., the Wyandanch Youth Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport, and the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau, provides free educational and recreational activities to youths between the ages of 12-18 in the communities of Brentwood, Huntington, Central Islip, Wyandanch and Bellport.

“With summer right around the corner, we are reminding local students to get involved and sign up for a host of activities in their community,” said County Executive Bellone. “Whether it’s learning how to prepare a meal or playing a basketball game, there is something for everyone in the coming weeks ahead.”

The Summer Youth Connection Program offers a variety of activities for boys and girls to enjoy, including free meals provided daily by Island Harvest. Enrollment is based on a first-come, first-serve basis and registration is required. The Program will offer athletic activities, which are provided through the Suffolk County Police Athletic League, such as basketball clinics, paddle boating, open gym activities, and boot camp fitness training. Those interested in other activities can choose from photography, robotics, music lessons, fire and police academy education, cooking classes, gardening, dance and dramatic arts, violence prevention education, healthy relationship skills, arts and crafts, community service, and parent workshops. In addition, a talent show will be held for those interested in showing off their own unique set of skills.


Brentwood

The Summer Youth Connection in Brentwood will begin July 10 through August 17, Mondays through Thursdays at the South Middle School on Candlewood Road. Parents and guardians can register their children at the South Middle School on June 21 & 22 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM as well as at the Brentwood Public Library on June 13 &14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Huntington

The Summer Youth Connection in Huntington will begin July 10 through August 18, Mondays through Thursdays at Walt Whitman High School. This will also include a special needs component held on Friday nights. Registration is available online here or contact Michele Martins with the Town of Huntington at 631-351-3317.

Central Islip

The Summer Youth Connection in Central Islip will begin July 11 through August 18, Tuesdays through Fridays, at the New York Institute of Technology. Registration is available on June 15 at Central Islip High School from 4 – 6:30 p.m. and on July 6 at NYIT from 1-4 p.m. or by calling 631-348-4735.

Wyandanch

The Summer Youth Connection in Wyandanch will begin July 10 through August 25, Tuesdays through Fridays. The events will take place at the Wyandanch Youth Center and Wyandanch Park. Registration is available on weekdays by calling 631-920-5600.

Bellport

The Summer Youth Connection Program in Bellport will begin July 11 through August 18, Tuesdays through Fridays, at the Boys & Girls Club on Atlantic Avenue. Participants can register online at bgcbellport.org or by calling 631-286-9090.


A number of individuals have also partnered with Suffolk County to host the Summer Youth Connection Program. These include Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, Huntington Councilwoman Tracey Edwards, Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislators Monica Martinez, Kate Browning and Robert Calarco, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Brookhaven Councilman Michael Loguercio.

The Program has also partnered with Suffolk County Youth Bureau, Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Suffolk County PAL, EOC of Suffolk, Inc., Huntington Opportunity Resource Center, Brentwood South Huntington School Districts and the Wyandanch Family Life Center/Youth Center.
