WFSD varsity wrestling continues great season

Posted

In a tournament featuring some of the top teams across Long Island, held over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the William Floyd High School varsity wrestling team emerged victorious in the 37th annual Kujan Brothers’ Memorial Tournament. The Colonials, led by longtime head coach Tony Mecca, finished the tournament with a team score of 299.5, 15 points better than second-place Bellport. Other competitors in the tournament included wrestlers from Plainedge, Smithtown East, Newfield, Half Hollow Hills West, Westhampton Beach, Glen Cove and Center Moriches. William Floyd also had 17 wrestlers place in the top six in their respective weight class, including three overall champions.

The Kujan Brothers’ Memorial Tournament is a storied tradition that features some of the top teams across Nassau and Suffolk counties competing in honor of two former William Floyd wrestlers, Kevin and Steve Kujan. Both brothers tragically died in a motorcycle crash in 1984. This event, for the past 37 years, has brought the wrestling community together and helped preserved Kevin and Steve’s memory.

Suffolk County Dual Meet

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the No. 16-ranked Colonials put together another impressive performance in the Suffolk County Dual Meet for the first time in school history and finished in second place, falling to No. 1 East Islip in the finals, 36-27.

Then on Saturday, Jan. 21, the Colonials went 3-1 in the Deer Park Dual Meet with wins over Deer Park (72-6), Mt. Sinai (39-27) and Center Moriches (66-12); they lost a close one to Sayville (35-27). Jack Meyer, Aaron Nelson, Andy Pineda and Carlos Marquina went 4-0.

Next up for the Colonials is the League I championships on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Congratulations to head coach Tony Mecca, his coaching staff, and the student-athletes on a great season, and good luck the rest of the way.
